Welcome to the NIML
The Neurophysiological Imaging and Modeling Laboratory (NIML) at The University of Idaho Department of Biological Engineering is led by Dr. Bryn Martin.
Mission
The mission of the NIML is to become a leading laboratory in the study of the cerebrospinal fluid system in relation to neurological disorders and to contribute to the advancement of cerebrospinal-fluid-based technologies through active transfer of our know-how to the clinic and to the medical technology sector.
Focus
We conduct clinical translational research to investigate the pathophysiology of central nervous system disorders and develop related medical technologies. To help translate these findings and technologies to the clinic, we collaborate with neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists and medical device manufacturers.
Research
Current NIML imaging and modeling focus topics include:
- Cerebrospinal fluid system physiology
- Advanced MRI and ultrasound imaging and post-processing techniques
- Computational fluid dynamics simulation of biological flows
- Astronaut eye and brain biomechanics
- Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's
- Chiari malformation and hydrocephalus
- Intrathecal drug and gene vector delivery
- Neuropheresis
- In vitro modeling
- Virtual reality for medical applications
