Welcome to the NIML
The Neurophysiological Imaging and Modeling Laboratory (NIML) at The University of Idaho Department of Biological Engineering is led by Bryn Martin. We conduct clinical translational research to investigate the pathophysiology of central nervous system (CNS) disorders and develop related medical technologies.
Mission
The mission of the NIML is to become a leading laboratory in the study of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) system in relation to neurological disorders and to contribute to the advancement of CSF related technologies through active transfer of our know-how to the clinic and to the medical technology sector. Our multidisciplinary team and collaborators includes neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuroradiologists, engineers, artists, biologists and medical device manufacturers. Current research focus areas include:
- CSF physiology, Chiari malformation & hydrocephalus
- Advanced MRI and ultrasound imaging and post-processing techniques
- Computational fluid dynamics simulation of biological flows
- Astronaut eye and brain biomechanics
- MRI-based Biomarkers for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinson's
- Intrathecal drug and gene vector delivery and neuropheresis
- In vitro modeling
- Virtual reality for medical applications
Research
- Current projects that we are working on.
- Past projects that have been completed.
- Youtube videos of our research.
- Publications based on NIML research.
- Background information on cerebrospinal fluid and the CNS.
